10"-13" Large Japanese Glass Fishing Floats
Auction: June 2025 Premier Auction
- Saturday, June 14, 2025
Two vintage Japanese glass fishing floats, originally handmade in Japan from recycled glass to serve as air-filled buoy balls supporting large groups of fishnets in the Pacific Ocean. Having long-since been replaced by modern materials, many glass floats remain afloat, stuck in a circular pattern of ocean currents in the North Pacific; storms and certain tidal conditions will cause floats to break away from the current and bring them ashore onto the beaches of the Western United States, especially Alaska. The intricately knotted netting allowed the glass floats to be securely fastened to the fishnet. These rather large examples, of similar shape and size, each measure approximately 10" in diameter x 13" tall, including the netting.
Early 1900s Adlake Non-Sweating Railroad Switch Lamp w/ Red & Blue Lenses
Auction: June 2025 Premier Auction
- Saturday, June 14, 2025
A beautiful early 1900's railroad switch lamp, marked on the top with "The Adlake Non-Sweating Lamp - Chicago," inside on the burner with "The Adams & Westlake Co. New York - Philadelphia - Chicago - Use Kerosene Oil Only," and model 1264 upon the base. Switch lamps were mounted within the train yard, usually near the operating level for the switch, and would display different colored lights to show the switch's alignment. In this example, two bullseye lenses are red, indicating a diverging or siding track, and two lenses are blue, indicating a straight track alignment. Blue lenses, oddly enough, will glow green when illuminated, due to the yellow color of the flame. The non-sweating model by Adlake was designed to prevent condensation from developing inside and blocking the lenses, or causing the flame to extinguish. Untested at time of cataloging, the lantern demonstrates some light surface wear and paint loss commensurate with age and use. Measures approximately 9.25" in diameter x 21" high with handle up, 15.5" with handle down. Edward Charles Williams "Young Anglers" Oil Painting
Auction: June 2025 Premier Auction
- Saturday, June 14, 2025
A rich original oil on board fishing scene entitled "Young Anglers" and painted in the classic Victorian Era landscape manner. The image depicts a group of boys fishing from the side of a meandering stream, a distant field of sheep visible with a farmhouse further beyond in a grove of trees. Signed en verso by Edward Charles (E.C.) Williams (English, 1807-1881), the eldest son of Edward Williams (English, 1781-1855) and part of a large painting family dynasty, sometimes called "The Barnes School." He was also related to famous artists James Ward RA and George Morland. Edward C. Williams stopped painting his rich and tranquil views of Barnes, Cumberland, Kent, and Thames shortly after the 1859 death of his second wife. This has added much value to the small number of paintings he did produce from 1859 on, and as a result, his paintings are now highly sought after. The wood ground and the frame have some cracking, and the paint surface displays craquelure, as photographed. Housed in the original ornate frame measuring approximately 26.5" x 34" overall, with sight view of 20.5" x 29".
